Where did the time go?
Happy New Year, everyone.
It's 2013 and I am thinking about my goals for the coming year.
Last year, I increased my daily prose intake and read many books that were on my to-read list and more besides that I bought throughout the year. This is a good thing taking into account my complaints about barely finishing a book in months.
On the downside, I hardly did any writing. It can be a trial to find the energy to write with a full-time job so that is something I am struggling with. I have also been focusing on my relationship, which consumes my weekends and most of my idle hours.
So for this year, I will strive to write more poetry, work on my novels, try my hand at writing short stories and consider freelancing.
I am quite confused about this freelancing business. When signing up for websites, they mention a variety of writing software I've never heard about before, which probably means they would not accept my application. So how are you supposed to start freelance writing?
Do you take a course? Do you buy said software online? I will ask some fellow creative souls for advice.
If an experienced freelancer is reading this, do not hesitate to drop me a line!

Muse
My Muse went missing sometime ago hence my absence from these hallowed halls.
However, today she was spotted fleeing the graceful arms of society's latest dandy and after a short excursion to the high street was swiftly apprehended on the corner of McDonald's. It seems my Muse felt a sudden craving for a McFlurry. As Muses do.
It has now been returned to me covered in vanilla ice cream so I'll give her a proper washing before I put her back to work.
Many thanks to my mysterious benefactor. You shall have your reward.
Yours sincerely,
The Scribbles on the Wall

National Poetry Day
Why did no one tell me it was National Poetry Day?
I could've written something truly inspiring. Well, perhaps. I could've given it a go at least.
Still could, but it's getting late and my brain is half-way to Neverland. Not sure it could still produce coherent sentences.
Never mind masterful poetry and to make a half-hearted attempt would be an insult to National Poetry Day, would it not?
It is. Or so I tell myself. Perfect excuse.
As the Spanish would say: "Mañana, mañana!"
Because tomorrow... is another day! Better make it count then.

The Art of Procrastination
I often think to myself: this weekend I'm going to write!
What's wrong with this way of thinking?
First of all, writing shouldn't have to be planned. Second of all, it should be done every day.
I come up with many excuses not to do it. Some of my favourites?
1. First, I should check my email/read the news/update my facebook, etc.
2. But there's a nice film/TV show on that I should watch for inspiration.
3. Maybe later. Let's listen to some music first.
4. I still need to get my groceries/do my laundry.
5. But my friend/boyfriend/relative just got online and we haven't spoken in....hours!
Of course there aren't enough hours in the day to do all the things we want to do. Which is why we should get our priorities straight. What is more important? Working on that international best-seller that is sure to win the Nobel Prize of Literature... or watch random cat videos on YouTube?
The choice is yours.

Ode to a Writing Desk
Aren't writing desks the most fantabulous things? I certainly think so and antique writing desks even more so due to the history behind it.
Just imagining myself sitting behind such a fine piece of furniture inspires me. I think of the creative souls of yesteryears that sat in my place, writing their letters (back when people still put pen to paper) and keeping in touch with distant relatives. A time when we travelled by carriage and dreamed of uncharted territory.
Writing desks remind me of courtship. Yes, they open up a whole world of girlish romance. And I'm not even trying to resist. So, let's marvel at a few lovely specimens. I own an antique one myself that I shall share soon in a post dedicated to the delights of antiquities.

Fine, I cheated. This is a whole set. But I love it!

New Year's Literary Resolutions
Happy New Year!
May 2011 become a year of success, great happiness and wisdom. I hope my fellow-writers will achieve their literary goals and get the recognition they deserve. As for me, I only have a few New Year's Resolutions and they're fairly modest and realistic.
-drumroll-
My goals for the upcoming year are as follows:
- To continue improving my craft through constant exercise
- To get a short story published in an anthology
- To enter writing competitions to get my work out there
- To finish the first draft of my manuscript
- To undertake further training in a creative writing course
Definitely doable, right?
I have already made my payment for the Brit Writers' Awards so I am putting the finishing touches on my requirements for resolution #3. A good beginning of the new year! I have added a few new links to my writing directory so I can soon move on to #2 and #5. Wish me luck! With all the talent we have out there, I'm going to need it.
